How Your Breasts Change Throughout Life
There probably isn't another part of your body that changes quite as much as your breasts do over a lifetime. Sometimes the changes are gradual. Other times, they seem to happen almost overnight.
That's also why your favourite bra that once fitted perfectly can suddenly start gaping, digging in or feeling less supportive.
In this guide, we’ll look at some of the biggest phases of life that affect your breasts, explain what to expect, and share links to further reading that can help you find a bra that suits your stage.
Why Do Breasts Change So Much?
Breast changes are a normal part of life. Our breast tissue responds to hormones, body fat, ageing and pregnancy throughout adulthood, and while we’ll all have slightly different experiences, almost everyone has some sort of change in breast size, shape or firmness during their lift.
Unlike your shoe size or the length of your arms, your breasts are heavily influenced by hormones and fatty tissue, making them one of the most changeable parts of your body. And as well as increasing or decreasing in size, they can also change in shape, so a style that looked great in your thirties might not suit you in your forties.
Most women will need to wear different bra sizes throughout their lives, and try out a variety of different styles until they find the one that works for them. The best place to start is by understanding your current breast shape, and then narrowing down your choices based on what you’re looking for in a bra.
How Your Breasts Change at Different Stages of Life
Puberty
Puberty is where it all begins, with breasts usually developing between the ages of 8 and 13. Breasts actually grow at different rates during puberty, so it’s completely normal for one breast to be larger than the other, or for their shape to change throughout your teens.
And while puberty may be the start of our journey into womanhood, it’s far from being the only life stop on along the road.
Pregnancy
We often think of morning sickness as the first sign that someone is pregnant, but actually, it’s our boobs that tend to send the earliest signals.
Breast changes can begin as soon as the first few weeks of pregnancy, long before you have a visible bump. Your breasts might become fuller, heavier and more sensitive, and your old bras may become unbearable to wear.
You’ll definitely want to invest in some maternity bras to make life more comfortable, but one thing our fit team notices is women buying maternity bras far too early in pregnancy, then wondering why they don't fit a few months later. Your breasts still have a lot of changing to do throughout pregnancy, so it’s best to push through the first trimester with what you’ve got on hand, rather than buying a new drawer of bras.

Breastfeeding
It’s amazing how much breasts change while breastfeeding, not just in those first few months, but over the course of a day! A great breastfeeding bra has enough ‘give’ that it will support you through the highs and lows, and make it easy to feed on demand when you’re out and about.
As your milk supply regulates and eventually comes to an end, your breasts may settle into a different shape or size than they were before pregnancy. Many women notice that, post-nursing, their breasts aren’t as full and are more bottom-heavy. Buying a beautiful bra that works for your new shape is a great way to celebrate the end of one journey, and the start of another.
Weight Changes
Not everyone gains or loses weight evenly, and your breasts are no exception.
Many women expect weight loss to reduce their cup size first, but in fittings we often see the band change long before the cups do. That being said, some women store weight in their breasts, and notice any weight changes in their cup size long before their band.
Even within the same cup size, you could find you lose fullness at the top of your breasts while the rest of the cup still fits. Or you could find that a bra you've worn for years suddenly starts gaping, cutting in or feeling unsupportive.
Understanding how weight loss and weight gain affect bra fit and checking your size are the first steps toward finding a comfortable fit again.
Menopause
Menopause can change your breasts as much as puberty does, yet most women are never told what to expect. As oestrogen levels fall, breast tissue becomes softer and less dense, and the skin can be less supportive and elastic. What that means for your breasts is that they can suddenly have a mind of their own and won’t always stay nicely where they’re told. Bras you used to love wearing can start gaping, feeling uncomfortable or not giving you a flattering shape under clothes.
Because these changes happen gradually, they're easy to put down to an old bra that needs replacing, but more often than not, it's your breasts that have changed rather than the bra itself.
We cover this in more detail in How Menopause Changes Your Bra Size.
Finding the right bra for post-menopausal breasts can make a big difference in your comfort. Look for bras with flexible cups rather than rigid, moulded styles, or read on to learn more about the best bras for ageing.
Ageing
Even after menopause, your breasts continue to change as you get older. Skin loses more elasticity over time, and the ligaments that support your breasts gradually stretch. It's all part of the normal ageing process, but it can mean that, once again, you’re having to shop for new bras.
But don’t fret, you no longer have to face the cold hands of the changing room fitting staff to find a great bra. Instead, start by reading our guide to the Best Bras for Ageing Busts and try one on in the comfort of your own home.
How to Know When It's Time for a New Bra
If your breasts have changed, your bra will usually do a pretty good job of letting you know. Look for:
-
Cups that gape or wrinkle.
-
Breast tissue spilling over the top or sides.
-
Underwires that dig in or sit on breast tissue.
-
A band that feels too tight or rides up your back.
-
Being conscious of your bra during the day.
If any of these sound familiar, it's worth checking your size and thinking about whether a different bra might suit your current breast shape better.
Do Breasts Ever Stop Changing?
Not really. They continue changing throughout adulthood because hormones, ageing, pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause and body weight all influence breast tissue. The changes may be mild enough that our bra size remains the same for a decent stretch of time, but there are still changes happening, even when we’re not aware of them.
